About Us

This website is to showcase the work, life-story and social projects related to the Pakistani Artist BARKAAT.

Barkaat discovered his artistic acumen when a life-changing brain injury left him disabled. He was paralysed down his right side and lost his ability to speak. Deprived of the privilege of communication, he found the power of art to give him a new direction and meaning in life.

Not only did he start making paintings, his ambition paved the way for him to earn a BFA honours degree from Punjab University Lahore and an MPHIL in visual arts from National College of Arts, Lahore. His thesis work was dedicated to disability.

Barkaat has sold his paintings nationally and internationally. He has had successful solo shows as well as  group exhibitions in London, Indianapolis, Kuala Lumpur and New Jersey.

Barkaat’s story has been featured in TEDx Talks. In 2019 he was nominated as The Citizens Foundation (TCF) Hero.

His work has consolidated the establishment of the Disability Arts Movement in Pakistan. He is a pioneer on the role of art and creative empowerment for the inclusion of special needs people in mainstream society.
